Life, it happens. Be ready for it.

I was just opening up my web browser and in the menu bar are all the sites i typically visit daily to keep in touch etc, one of which is a link to this blog.  That’s when i realized i hadn’t posted in a while.  I know i was redesigning my website (www.thatcomputerguy.org) using RapidWeaver as i have mentioned in numerous entries, but that is no excuse for not posting.  The main reason is i’m just too busy.  Sure, i’ve got work to keep me busy, and the computer repair/consulting biz on the side and then of course there is family stuff, and owning a home.  That’s the one that has really kept me busy for the past week or so, ever since the big flood in the basement that is.  Without boring you with the details, suffice to say, we awoke to a wet basement – ground water thankfully not sanitary backup – and we are in the process of cleaning it all up and renovated the basement at the same time.  it was due to be done, although not quite yet, but oh well, it happens, just roll with it and keep going i say.

Anyways…. what’s this got to do with technology and computers?  Well, i hope this isn’t too much of a stretch, but then again, hey, it’s my blog i can do what i want.  Life happens, be prepared for it, and by that i mean try and prepare for the worst and plan for the best at the same time.  A small flood like we had was enough to make me rethink how and where i keep my important stuff/files/photos etc.  I have been pretty good at scanning some of the old photos and of course everything i have taken in the past 4 years or so is digital anyway so that is a no brainer – its backed up daily, so that is safe. but what about all the other stuff that is stored away in boxes and photo albums?  That is what the flood made me realize.  there are a lot of memories stashed away, impossible to recreate memories captured on film, or on old paper as in paintings and drawings that your kids made, or maybe even you made, that would be impossible to recreate.  Thankfully for us it was only a couple inches of water so most things were saved simply by not being on the floor, but it only would have taken a couple more inches of water to completely destroy some mementoes.  This bring me to the subject, finally.  Take the time to store away your important pictures, forms, legal docs, certificates, etc in something watertight as well as fireproof.  Seems simple but remember, if you did have a fire, chances are it would be put out with water, so you better make sure where you are storing that signed autograph of Boy George is waterproof as well as fire-proof.  Also, take the time to scan in anything you can and save that in a couple of places. A flashdrive/thumbdrive cd, dvd, on your computer (which you regularly backup – right?) so that way you have access to it as well as have a copy in case the worst happens and the originals are lost or destroyed.

I’ve decided to treat our little mishap as a learning experience and a wake-up call.  I suggest you do the same, it easier to prepare for the worst and not have it happen, than to try and go back in time after the fact.  Well, until someone invents a time machine that is, and when that happens i’ll just go back and delete this blog entry before its posted.
